if u think ab it they literally take crap ppl dont want anymore and turn it into jobs and incomes for people who have difficulty finding work idk i think thats pretty damn cool
Do we have any more corroboration on the fact that the Salvation Army does help queer people? I know they put out a press release about this, but it was tied to a specific region.
I just want to make sure it’s safe for me to buy clothes from their stores, since I’ve been trying to avoid Goodwill in the wake of the way they treat their disabled employees. (I can afford jeans and simple T-shirts from Target, etc, but nice blouses, sweaters, dresses, etc, I have much better luck actually affording at thrift shops.)
uuuh they’re not just anti-gay they also discriminate against all non-christians and sometimes women and POC. but srsly nobody is going to judge you for buying clothes from douchey people if that’s the only place you can afford it. it’s not your fault they’re douches.
If you want to find thrift stores not linked to problematic behavior, your best bet is to shop at independent/local thrift stores. Goodwill and Salvation Army also are more expensive than most local family-owned thrift stores, and usually more picked over when it comes to good stuff (in my experience) and a lot of them are linked to local shelters and charities. Also, YWCA also has great thrift/re-sale shops and you’re supporting a good cause (their motto is literally “Eliminating Racism, Empowering Women”).
just throwing it out there that goodwill’s disabled employees are not regular employees typically they are not hired but rather part of their program that provides basic job skill training, help creating a resume, and usually a job for 90 days so they will have recent employment to put on applications. after those 90 days, if there is a job opening they are capable of doing, they usually promote the people from these programs. goodwill was one of the first organizations to hire disabled people EVER that was literally the reason the organization was founded and they really do work to find jobs within their company to fit the abilities of anyone no matter how able. the instances of very low pay are extremely rare (this does not make it ok) and, as i know is true with the location near me, the pay is sometimes (still rarely) slightly lower so that disabled people will not lose their social security and medicaid benefits. goodwill’s mission is not to provide affordable clothing, it is to provide jobs to anyone that wants to work, with any skill set. (im not saying this excuses instances of extremely low pay tho)
